5 August 2015: Dol St Anne – Hvar Wine Tasting at 9pm

Our next event will be 5 August 2015 in Dol (Dol St. Anne) at the PUHIJADE , a multi-day festival organized by Dol’s “Tartajun” Association.

The name Tartajun comes from the agricultural tool, which is a piece of wood around 30cm long used for firmly binding goatskins and sacks.

Discover the attractions of this Hvar village, one of the oldest settlements on the island, which hides the legend of the Illyrian Queen Teuta and maintains the oldest vineyard of Plavac mali in Croatia.

Dol is tucked away on the wooded slopes of the northern side of the island, amidst terraces of olive groves and vineyards with a light sandy soil. The Dol slopes overlook the Stari Grad bay and fields (known as Ager or Hora) and following the road to the top of the island, you can enjoy the centuries-old forest of indigenous oak. Dol consists of two villages, known as Dol St. Anne and Dol St. Mary. Archaeological remains in the area testify to people living here from prehistoric times!

Nearby can be found the Illyrian hill “Purkin kuk”, the ancient Roman villa rustica Kupinovik, and the continuity of life in Dol is demonstrated by the medieval church of St. Domnius, dating from the 11th century.

Find us in Dol St. Anne and enjoy Hvar wines and live music!

Merchants were coming by their ships and they were collecting the wine from the Beach to the Beach. The islanders call all the villages of the south side “the Beaches”, and so every village  has their own, Pitve village  has Zavala (Beach), Svirče- Ivan Dolac (Beach), sometime ago even Sv. Nedija, which long ago was distinguished as a parish and became an independent village from Svirče.

Eventually Ivan Dolac became  the place where the islanders stayed over the summer with their families, and today is a favorite place of tourists who love beautiful beaches, clear waters and excellent wines of Hvar. Surrounded by steep vineyards, rosemary and olive trees, Ivan Dolac is widely known today as the famous vineyard appellation.

A glorious past and a big disaster is testified by votive church in the old part of the village, which tells the story of the arrival of the great plague – the three evils who devastated Hvar, but also the Dalmatian vineyards and caused a great hunger and emigration of our ancestors.

WINE JOURNALISTS TO VISIT HVAR WINEMAKERS ASSOCIATION

This year, wine journalists are visiting us, organized by Festival Zagreb VINOcom, being held for the 9th year in Zagreb’s Esplanade Hotel  (28.-29. 11. 2014.). Immediately before the Festival, a group of 29 journalists will visit several Croatian wine regions, including the island of Hvar.

Starogradsko polje

Stari Grad Plain

Members of the Hvar Winemakers’ Association will be presenting their wines at a tasting given at the Tomić Winery on Tuesday (11/25/2014) Before the guided tasting, President Ivana Krstulović Carić, dipl.ing.agr, will give a short presentation “Hvar Island of  Wine”, explaining the activities of the association.

At the event, we will be joined by representatives of local authorities and tourist offices, who, along with the winemakers helped to bring about this visit.

The next day we will tour the central part of the island, showing the most important characteristic wineslopes of Hvar, such as terraced vineyards, the Stari Grad Plain and Hvar Beaches. The program will include visits to wineries: Pinjata in Vrboska, Plenković – Zlatan Otok in Sv. Nedjelja, and  PZ Svirče in Svirče.

As the story of Hvar wines would not be complete without its cultural and historical side, the journalists will be accompanied by tour guides Ivana Krstulović Carić and Siniša Matković Mikulčić.

What will the wine journalists write about Hvar – Island of Wine? We shall find out soon!

IT’S TIME FOR PLAVAC MALI FROM THE HVAR BEACHES!

This week we started harvesting the plavac mali from our island’s south slopes!

The steep southern slopes, bathed in sunlight and sea breezes, are Hvar’s most famous vineyards, extending from Zavala, Medvid Bod, Ivan Dolac and Jagodna to Sv. Nedjelja.

Despite the harsh climate, grapes from the “Hvar Beaches” are of very good quality!

The most famous wines from these positions have evocative names such as Ivan Dolac (PZ Svirče i Vujnović), named after the village famous for its beautiful pebble beaches,  Plovac Ploški (Carić), meaning “Plavac from the beach“, Medvid (Duboković) named after the Medvid Bod, a hidden beach maybe the most beautiful of all, which once was home to the Mediterranean monk seal.

Or they may simply be named Plavac, as in Plavac mali barrique (Tomić) or Zlatan Plavac (Plenković).
