MASTER CLASS: ROBERTO LEPORI – Plavac mali: the noble son of a royal vine that crossed the oceans: Tribidrag/Primitivo/Zinfandel

I enthusiastically welcomed Ivana Krstulović Carić’s invitation, the President of the Hvar Winemakers’ Association (Hvar Otok Vina), to lead the Hvar Island red wine tasting workshop. The topic was to follow the story of the original Tribidrag or Crljenak vine, linking it to his brother Italian Primitivo, in the most authentic expression of the different areas of Puglia , and to the “noble son” Plavac Mali.

On May 10th and 11th the Wine Festival of the Adriatic’s wine was celebrated: Tribidrag, Primitivo, Plavac Mali. A hug between the two coasts of the Adriatic symbolized by the common love for this wine full of emotions, aromas, pleasant sensations that has cheered to the most sublime palates, over the centuries, and has crowned and celebrated meetings and festive moments with the warm complacency of “god Bacchus”.

A generous wine with high sugars and high acids, with strong tannic presence and deep aromas of berries and flavour of spices. The strong mineral presence in the soil, makes the wine long-lived, and with indomitable character.

Three different expressions of excellent quality: The TERRAGNOLO with a nose full of ripe cherry fruit, plum and blackberry and balsamic and spices . Long persistence with coffee , black fruits and coconut in the finish. POLVANERA 16, from “red soil”, rich in iron, with notes of red mulberry, delicate violet and aromatic herbs. In the finish, taste of liquorice and graphite. 14 DI TERRA, from potassium and iron soil, rich in poliphenolic structure, with delicate notes of red ripe fruits and floral sensations. perfectly balanced in alcohol, minerality and acidity. Velvet tannin and long persistence.

The overall quality of the wines has greatly improved over the years. The best use of the wood used for refining, the yeast selection techniques and the care in the selection of the grapes has given rise to wines comparable with a good quality international standard.

Plavac Mali is a difficult wine to make. It is a racehorse, and like all thoroughbreds it  must be tamed in its most intense expressions. It is not easy to tame the tannin, the strong intensity of the anthocyanins and the high sugar content of the grapes. But the wisdom of the Dalmatian winemakers makes this wine pleasant, making velvety the astringency, sublime the aroma, fruity and spicy the flavor, and dry and enveloping the body of the wine.

ZLATAN CRLJENAK, pure Tribidrag from the Makarska area, rich in fruits and acidity. slight tannin and long persistence. FAROS OPOL, rich in minerality and deep secondary flavors. Aged in steel makes the wine easy to drink and pleasant in its balance. Sandy soils give a good degree of acidity and composure to the wine. MAIOR REZERVA is a complex and harmonious wine, with warm tones and balanced structure. Slavonian wood, where the wine matures, gives composure and pleasantness to the tannins and freshness on the palate. PLAVAC DE LUX is a wine very rich in polyphenols, with tannins still to evolve. A wine to be used with structured dishes to mitigate the strong plant presence. PLOVAC PLOŠKI is a wine made with wisdom. The use of large Slavonian barrels soften the imperious tannin very well, leaving ample space for the components of ripe red fruit and delicate white spices. A wine with great vigor, well balanced in alcohol and pleasantly harmonious in mineral components and freshness. PLAVAC MALI BARRIQUE, an unmistakable wine, elegantly structured. Soft, harmonious, long and persistent. The French oak is perfectly dosed to avoid invading the fullness of ripe fruit and black fruit flavors. Each sip highlights all the complex aromas of the wine, perfectly distinguishable. Pleasant spicy and slightly balsamic finish.

Vina berbe 2017. pokazala su prpošnost i svježinu u izričaju, delikatne, čiste arome i sjajnu ravnotežu u okusu, idealno vino za ljetno osvježenje na osunčanom otoku Hvaru.

  Bogdanuša kao sorta pokazuje se sjajnom u hvarskom terroiru zadržavanjem vinske kiseline u grožđu koja kasnije rezultira svježinom u vinu i odličnom otpornošću na suše pri kojima sorta poput pošipa ne uspijeva opstati u tim kritičnim uvjetima.
Velik korak unaprijed koji smo imali priliku iskusiti je prikaz koji smo doživjeli u dva vina, koji dokazuje i staru predaju zrelih vinara na otoku, a to je da je Bogdanuša sposobna iznijeti “Velika vina” s dugim životnim vijekom u kojem se razvijaju, koja su moćnog tijela, trajnog okusa i ostavljaju duboke impresije.

After tasting the Hvar (Festival Hvar Otok Vina-  11.05.2018. Hvar – Hotel Amfora) white wines from wineries, members of the Hvar Winemakers Association, primarily Bogdanusa, we were left with superb impressions.The winemakers skills and knowledge, use of more and more modern technology, and above all their hard work, resulted in wine styles that we have been long waiting and hoping for.

Wines from the 2017 harvest have shown us liveliness and freshness of expression, delicate, clean aromas, and great balance in the taste.

Bogdanusa as a sort is the ideal wine for summer refreshment on the sunny island of Hvar, perfectly suited for the terroir, protecting the wine acids in the grapes, which gives both resistance to draught and also freshness in the resulting wine. Even a variety like posip has difficulty surviving in these critical conditions.

We had the opportunity to experience a further, large step forward with two of the wines, which proved the stories from winemakers of old, that the Bogdanusa grape is capable of creating “great wines”. Wines with mighty bodies and a long life, during which they keep developing. Wines of long lasting tastes leaving strong, deep impressions.

In other words, Hvar wines are as contemporary as they come.

FESTIVAL “HVAR OTOK VINA” – HVAR ISLAND OF WINE – 10.-11.05.2018. HVAR

Hvar is the island of wine, its beautiful landscape is shaped by the vineyards.

Indigenous varieties are grown in the Hvar Wine Region such as Plavac mali, Bogdanuša, Prč, Darnekuša, Pošip,  and many more.

Its long history of winemaking began more than 24 centuries ago, and has marked the life of the islanders.  The festival “Hvar otok vina” – Hvar, Island of Wine will be held on May 10 & 11 in Hvar town to celebrate this long tradition of winemaking on the Island as a part of the Celebration of the 150th Anniversary of organised tourism on Hvar.

FESTIVAL MEDITERANSKE PREHRANE 19.-23. 08.2017. otok Hvar

SOLJENJE SRDELE

Svi mirisi i okusi Mediterana u pjatu srdele i žmulu hvarskog vina, ovih dana mogu se doživjeti u hvarskim restoranima i vinarijama, te na brojnim događanjima u sklopu 2. Festivala mediteranske prehrane. 

Ovim festivalom želja nam je predstaviti našu enogastro baštinu, a koja je prepoznata od strane UNESCO-a. Hrvatska je upisna na svjetsku listu nematerijalne kulturne baštine zajedno sa drugim mediteranskim zemljama (Španjolska, Cipar, Grčka, Italija, Maroko, Portugal)

Preciznije rečeno, dvije amblematske zajednice, otok Hvar i Brač predstavljaju Hrvatsku.

Mediteranska prehrana nije samo prehrana, to je prije svega stil života, stil koji se u današnje vrijeme globalizacije pomalo i gubi. A naša je želja da sačuvamo vrijednosti koje smo baštinili od svojih predaka.

Festival započinje na Pjaci, u srcu otoka Hvara u selu Svirče, a prva večer posvećena je BOGDANUŠI, bijeloj , autohtonoj hvarskoj sorti grožđa, od koje se spravljaju sortna vina, lagana i svježa, idealna za vruće, ljetne dane i kupaže s drugim dalmatinskim sortama.

Vino i lov na srdelu obilježili su otok Hvar kroz nebrojene trude u borbi s morem i sa krajem.

Srdelu zovemo “Hraniteljica”, jer je othranila generacije otočana, lov na srdelu bio je uz vinarstvo najvažnija privredna grana otoka.

Interesantne činjenice o srdeli saznati ćemo na predstavljanju slikovnice “Velika priča o maloj srdeli” u Ribarskoj zbirci Muzeja Općine Jelsa u Vrboskoj , dana 22.08.2017 g. u 20 h. 

 …već krajem XIII. st. spominju se trgovci koji kupuju ulov plave ribe, a početkom XVI. st. jedan ondašnji mletački izvjestitelj navodi da je više od trećine godišnjeg prihoda Hvara i Visa dolazilo od ulova srdele. Prilikom gušenja ustanka hvarskih pučana mletački plaćenici su 1512. g. samo u Vrboskoj opljačkali 10.000 barila soljene srdele i skuša. Alberto Fortis u Putu po Dalmaciji (objavljenom 1774. g.) navodi da su se “cijela Italija i dobar dio Levanta opskrbljivali sardelama s otoka Hvara i s, o njemu ovisnog, Visa”…

Autorica ove slikovnice  je Mirna Bojanić Rebac, u izdanju FLAG-a Škoji s namjerom da se male i velike čitatelje upozna s dijelom prirodnog i kulturnog bogatstva i istovremeno potakne sve ljude dobre volje na očuvanje i održivo korištenje blaga koje mu je povjereno.

Dobra spiza ne ide bez dobrog vina pa se u vinu i srdeli može uživati u raznovrsnoj ponudi jela na temu srdele i druge plave ribe.

In the courthyard of the Split City Museum this July 5th you can taste Bogdanjuša, from the

Carić winery, the autochthonous Hvar variety. A light, fresh, crispy white wine that was a part

of the religious feasts, as the name suggests. Beleca from the Tomić winery , has a rich and

sweet bouquet. It is produced from Pošip,the most important Dalmatian white variety, and

Bogdanuša. Both varieties create the perfect harmony in which Bogdanuša gives lightness and

freshness, and Pošip gives strength and body. Opolo rosé from Zlatan Otok winery – the most

important red Croatian variety, Plavac Mali, here gives an aromatic, fruity, summer wine. Plavac

2718 from the Duboković winery suggests the name of the number of sunny hours in the year

that the Island of Hvar refeives. The sun and heat are felt in each drop. This beautiful wine will

be followed by the snacks prepared by the Diocletian’s Wine House restaurant. You can also

taste these wines them from July 3 to July 10 in one of Winelife’s partner restaurants.
